Have pets that you love? Or just admire the beauty of our fuzzy friends? Join exhibiting artist Kate Citrin in a two hour workshop where she will cover the basics of animal portraiture. Using basic drawing principles, participants will create a drawing of animals (suggested as a family pet) from a picture they have brought with them. The class will start with demos, of which the students will follow along sketching their own versions, then proceed to work time where they will set up the basic structure their portraits will follow. Finally, as the students become more comfortable with the outlines of their work, Ms. Citrin will work one on one with them, punctuated by short instructions given to the whole class to assist their progress. Please bring a photo of your pet or an animal you like (the best images have strong directional light sources). Feel free to bring a couple of photos and Ms. Citrin will help select the best one. No artistic experience necessary. Kate Citrin holds her BFA from Grand Valley State University and has additional training from Old Town School of Art, Vitruvian Fine Arts Academy, and Drawing America. She has been painting since 2002 and has shown at numerous galleries internationally, including in an exhibit curated by the Guerrilla Girls. Her awards include Special Commendation at the Florence Biennale, The Poseidon Award in Venice, and both Finalist and Overall Honorable Mention from Wild Heart Gallery in Coachella Valley. Her exhibit, Two Bodies: Artworks Uniting Us, will be on display April 12 to June 27, 2026 in the eighth-floor exhibit cases at Harold Washington Library Center.
