Northbrook is a village of about 34,000 people in Cook County, on Chicago's North Shore. It's a smaller town than Aurora or Bolingbrook — but kids' recreation punches much higher than the population would suggest.
The Northbrook Park District is the anchor. It runs two ice rinks, two swimming pools, two golf courses, a cycling velodrome (yes — actually), an activity center, a sports center, a theatre, and a lot more besides. Most kids' activities in Northbrook — camps, sports leagues, ice skating, swim, performing arts — route through the park district.
The Northbrook Public Library at 1201 Cedar Lane handles the free kids' programming: multiple weekly story times, reading challenges, and (since 2023) Spanish-language programs for kids.
Summer camps at Northbrook Park District kick off Monday, June 8, 2026 — registration is open now. There are half-day camps for ages 3-5 and full-day camps for ages 5-14, covering arts, theater, dance, chess, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, skateboarding, ice skating, hockey, and golf. Extended care runs as early as 7 am and as late as 6 pm if you need the longer day.
The Northbrook Sports Center houses two ice rinks — one of the few facilities in the area with that much ice time. Skating camps are organized by level (Basic 1 through Free Skate 4), and there's a dedicated hockey camp run by coaches from the Northbrook Hockey League with both on-ice and off-ice training.
Two outdoor pools open in late spring: Meadowhill Aquatic Center opens May 23 and the Northbrook Sports Center Pool opens June 6. The park district runs lesson programs and swim teams through the summer.
Youth lacrosse (boys grades K-8, girls under-8 and under-14) and soccer (pre-K through 6th grade) run spring and fall. Registration windows move fast — league-size caps fill early.
Northbrook has an actual Ed Rudolph Velodrome — an outdoor cycling track for track-racing programs, which is unusual for a suburb. The park district also runs the Northbrook Theatre for kids' performing arts. If your kid is into something niche, there's a good chance the park district has it.
The Northbrook Public Library runs three weekly story times (Saturday all-ages, Preschool ages 3-5, Bookflix animated-book story time) plus reading challenges and Spanish-language programs for kids. All free.
The primary public recreation provider; runs camps, sports leagues, swim, ice skating, hockey, dance, theatre, cycling.

The Northbrook Sports Center has two ice rinks. Skating camps are grouped by level (Basic 1 through Free Skate 4). Hockey camps are run by Northbrook Hockey League coaches and include on-ice and off-ice skill work.

A few. The park district operates the Ed Rudolph Velodrome (an outdoor cycling track — unusual for a suburb), the Northbrook Theatre for performing arts, and comprehensive ice programs across two rinks.
