Experience firsthand what it’s like to work as a leader with the Rockford Park District summer camps. Teens will learn how to lead sports, recreational activities, basic group planning, and communication skills. Following this four-day camp, teens will be placed as volunteers at a summer program or camp site. To ensure a successful experience for everyone, junior leaders should have a foundational level of independence and confidence in the following areas: • Communication: Able to interact respectfully and effectively with peers, younger campers, and staff. • Responsibility and Reliability: Comfortable following directions and completing tasks on time, with limited supervision. • Teamwork: Willing to collaborate and contribute as part of a team with fellow junior leaders and camp staff. • Problem-Solving: Can handle basic challenges independently and seek assistance when needed. Jr. Leader Training Notes: • Jr. Leaders can request their top 3 site locations; however, site requests are not guaranteed. Bloom, Wantz, and Highland parks are the top requested locations. • Site placements are determined by leader performance during training camp (leadership skills, following directions, and ability to work with kids), years of service volunteering, availability over the entire summer, and location needs. • Upon completion of summer programs, Jr. Leaders will receive a performance evaluation completed by the site directors regarding their ability to help with kids, punctuality, attendance, and leadership skills.
